In the early 12th century a group of hermits banded together on Mount Carmel in Israel. These men took the Virgin Mary as their patroness and became the first Carmelites. Since then the Order of Carmel has grown and expanded and can now be found throughout the world. In addition to the Friars and the Nuns, there are active communities which follow Carmelite spirituality as well as a secular branch comprised of both single and married men and women.
